The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the right to question certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
