Britain and America have established a significant commercial pact that will ensure no levies on British drug exports going into the American market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to boost spending on medicines through the NHS. This move secures that import taxes on these vital products will stay at nothing for a timeframe of the next three years.

This agreement is in response to recent statements to significantly raise tariffs on patented drug products, with figures mentioned up to double the cost.

"This deal with the UK bolsters the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and introduces much-needed balance to American-British medicine commerce," a release said.

Commercial Significance

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the the United Kingdom's most significant exports to the United States, which is easily the primary buyer for major UK drugmakers.

Export figures show that in the 12 months leading up to September, the UK shipped drugs valued at billions to the US. This value accounted for a significant portion of all goods exports in that period.

"This deal safeguards employment, increases investment and facilitates the UK to become a international leader for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Key NHS Changes

The pact entails several key commitments from the UK:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it deems new treatments to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a goal to increase total NHS spending on medicines from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Refund Ceiling: The amount drug companies must refund to the NHS to control costs will be limited at fifteen percent. In the past, repayments topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a long-running row between the drug companies and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

The disagreement were exacerbated by arguments that American customers were charged several times more for the same drugs than consumers in the UK and Europe.

Over the last 18 months, several large drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been pledged toward American operations.

One official stated that the NHS had to spend more on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had declined as a share of its resources over the past decade.
